Building Materials Delivery & Yard Worker

Position Summary:

The function of this position is to ensure that the building materials yard and warehouse are organized and stocked to be able to efficiently supply our customers. Then ensuring that customers are served to a high standard all the while maintaining a safe environment for customers and employees. This position also requires performing deliveries as required filling in on delivery truck for full-time drivers day off and holidays.

General Duties:

  1. Put orders together so they are ready for delivery or customer pick-up, communicating with office staff and delivery driver to ensure completed according to timing required.
  2. Help customers pick-up supplies when they come into the yard.
  3. Help customers with returns, ensure product is resalable and filling out proper paperwork to send to office.
  4. Unloading incoming product from suppliers and ensuring packing slip matches what has been shipped
  5. Assist in Unloading bi-weekly city trip van, ensuring items on van end up in the correct departments. Also ensure that items that come in for Building materials match the packing slips.
  6. Notify Building Materials Manager if packing slips don’t match incoming products.
  7. Communicating with Building Materials Manager to ensure yard and warehouse stock is maintained at levels that best serve our customers.
  8. Communicate with other yard staff to ensure breaks don’t overlap and someone is always around to help with customers.
  9. Communicate with fellow staff to ensure orders and projects are being completed and working together to determine who is doing what and things are being done as efficiently as possible.
  10. Ensure yard and warehouse remain in clean organized state. For yard includes weed and garbage control in summer and snow removal in winter. For warehouse includes floor cleaning and garbage removal.
  11. Building garden sheds, calf shelters, grain bin floors and other projects asked for by customers.
  12. Use Co-op equipment and tools in a safe manner and ensuring they are in good working order to perform functions required. If there are issues letting management know so appropriate Lockouts and repairs can be made.
  13. Make small deliveries to jobsites or pick-ups from city when required.
  14. Accompany delivery driver to assist in unloading and loading of windows and drywall into customer building.
  15. Drive Class 3 delivery truck to perform deliveries when main driver is away from work.
  16. Operator Truck Mount Forklift to unload truck at job sites.

Qualifications/Abilities:

  1. Standard First Aid Certificate
  2. WHMIS certificate
  3. Experience and knowledge about building products
  4. Experience operating construction tools including saws and drills
  5. Experience operating forklifts and telehandlers
  6. Experience with construction with the ability to build sheds without supervision
  7. Valid Class 3 driver’s License
  8. Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent 

Work Conditions:

  1. Able to work 40 hours per week as scheduled during our operating hours Monday thru Saturday, 7:30-5:30 

  2. Work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. 

  3. Safety equipment required, e.g steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc. 

  4. Hazards associated with the trade. 

  5. Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  1. Excellent communication skills with the ability to maintain a healthy, productive, and positive work environment with co-workers.
  2. Able to maintain Good communication skills between yourself and Building Materials Manager.
  3. Excellent organizational skills
  4. Ability to prioritize
  5. Maintain a professional appearance.

Departmental Summary:

The Building Materials Department consists of 8-9 people who are:

  • Building Materials Manager
  • Building Materials Salesman x 2
  • Building Materials Delivery Driver
  • Building Materials Yardperson x 3
  • Building Materials Delivery & Yard-person
  • Building Materials Yardperson Assistant (Seasonal)

The Building Materials Department is responsible for the sale and delivery of building materials for the Neerlandia Co-op

Building Materials Department tasks consist of, but are not limited to:

  1. Quoting Houses, Shops, pole sheds, garages, decks, and any other projects requiring building materials.
  2. Guide customers through their projects, informing them of products and options available to complete their building projects
  3. Supplying customers with their day to day building material products.
  4. Supplying customers with agriculture fencing posts and wire.
  5. Delivering Building materials to customers as required.
  6. Ensuring Building Materials Yard and Warehouse are kept in a condition that creates a neat, well maintained, and safe environment
  7. Ensuring Building Materials equipment (including all trucks, forklifts and tools) are well maintained and safe to operate.
